about

2021 will see the release of Ontic's new single 'Night Train', a driving industrial body-funk exploration of conspiracy and consequence.

'Night Train' follows 2019's debut album 'The Movement of Light', and 2020's electro-tech single 'Beijing'. The song tells the story of an evolving intrigue; of an impending rendezvous set against a psychologically ambiguous backdrop. The song centres on themes of instrumentality and agency; of imminent choices and their consequences.

The track's syncopated groove is built around a dynamically filtered mid-range synth, intertwined with deep bass stabs. Rhythmic elements dominate, though the arrangement still expounds a clear structural and melodic development. Along with its dominant bassline, the song's main hook comes in the form of the conspiratorial vocal refrain 'see you on the night train'. Searing claps and booming industrial snares present a percussive texture that juxtaposes contemporary synthpop against darker and more cavernous elements. Sonically, the deeply saturated rhythms and basses are set against the warmth of analogue pads and the richly vocoded vocals that conclude the song's leftfield pop arrangement.

lyrics

Man in the middle
Steam in the winter
Flood on the low plane
Cold on the mainline

Steel in the centre and
Sky in the winter with
Ice on the spillway with
Blood on the rucksack

Hear that hush on the water
Feel that still in the laneway
See that mark on the ceiling
Know that crack in the concrete

Hold that catch on the briefcase
Give that kiss on the mirror
Fold that crease in the contract
Play that knight to the checkmate

Be enough you know
You’ve got to find the need enough
To know you’re instrumental
Turn and watch them go
The world is waiting
Seek and find below
We're on a knife edge

Step on
Hold on

See you on the night train
See you on the night
See you on the night train
See you on the night

Man in the middle
Steam in the winter
Flood on the low plane
Cold on the mainline

Hear that voice in the back room
Take that chance on the stairway
Catch that hand at the light switch
Turn and see you on the fast train

Be enough you know
You’ve got to find the need enough
To know you’re instrumental
Turn and watch them go
The world is waiting
Seek and find below
We're on a knife edge

Step on
Hold on
Wheels turn
Night's gone

See you on the night train
See you on the night
See you on the night train
See you on the night

Man in the middle
Steam in the winter
See you on the night train
Flood on the low plane
Cold on the mainline
See you on the night

Voice in the back room
Chance on the stairway
See you on the night train
Hand at the light switch
See you on the fast train
See you on the night

And man in the middle and
And steam in the winter and
And flood on the low plane and
And cold on the mainline and
And voice in the back room
And chance on the stairway
And hand at the light switch
And see you on the night train
